From the Pier
by E'Lane Carlisle Murray

The fisherman steps out and shuts the door

as slender bars of gold show in the sky
and heavy grayness hugs the curving shore.

He sees the satin water moving by
and hears it plop and surge beneath the pier
while overhead the plaintive sea gulls cry.

The water's rim reveals the sun's red sphere
that sends a streak of bronze across the bay
and suddenly the morning air is clear.

His weathered face reflects the golden day
as casting out he hears the line's shrill song
and sinker plopping in the waterway.

The undercurrent draws his bait along.
He hooks and pulls the twisting silver trout
and makes his catch before the wind grows strong.
