There are two motels, three trailer parks, three condominium complexes on the
harbor, and about 75 fully furnished resort rental houses, including some on the
waterfront with lighted fishing piers. Usually a number of houses and lots for sale in
town, however, houses for long-term rental are very limited. Camping can be done at the
county park, which has a public access pier and picnic area.

Since Port Mansfield is so small, our schoolchildren are bussed to the San
Perlita School, in the small community halfway to Raymondville. You can call the San
Perlita School at 248-5250.
Schools of higher education in the valley are: Harlingen has the Texas State
Technical College, 425-0600; in Edinburg is UT_Pan American, 381-2011; and there is
UT_Brownsville in partnership with Texas Southmost College, 544-8200.

The Valley Morning Star, 423-5511, is the daily paper to which many
people in Port Mansfield subscribe. It is out of Harlingen and provides a TV Guide usable
in Port. It has advertisements for the many stores in Harlingen where Port residents often
must go to do some of their shopping. Copies of this daily paper are available in Port
Mansfield or for home delivery.
The Raymondville Chronicle, 689-2421, is a small weekly paper which is
of interest since it deals with Willacy County and is more likely to cover Port Mansfield.
It is available by mail.
Bargain Book, 423-1818, a weekly classified advertising tabloid is
distributed free throughout the valley. Issues are usually available at the Post Office
when they come out.
Other papers, such as USA Today and the Wall Street Journal, are
only available in Port Mansfield by mail, usually a day late.

Port Mansfield has only The Outpost for shopping. Grocery stores, auto parts,
pharmacies, hardware, building supplies and a Wal-Mart are in Raymondville. Harlingen (45
miles), Brownsville (75 miles) and McAllen (80 miles) have the shopping malls and many of
the larger stores at which most people like to shop. Many of these malls and stores are
along Highway 77, Business 77, and Highway 83.

Video rentals are available in Port Mansfield and Raymondville. Harlingen has
several theaters that show a variety of current movies and a couple of discount theaters.

Port Mansfield has a Chamber of Commerce, 944-2354, which also serves as the
focus of most social activity. The chamber building and community center is at the north
end of town and can be rented. Individual and business memberships in the chamber are only
$25 and $45. Social functions at the chamber are held throughout the year, especially
during the winter there are holiday meals, covered dish dinners, games, and exercise
classes.
The Rio Grande Valley International Chamber of Commerce puts out an annual
calendar of valley events for winter Texans. They can be reached at (956) 968-3141.

The Port Mansfield Volunteers, 944-2222, are part of the Willacy County EMS
and provide local ambulance service. These residents are trained in emergency care and
include a paramedic, but no doctor. Training for additional volunteers is available and
various fundraisers are undertaken during the year.
Willacy County EMS, 911, in Raymondville has paramedics and can provide an
ambulance if needed. For an ambulance in Port call 911 and our local service will be
dispatched. Since travel time by ambulance to the emergency room in Harlingen is so long,
a Life Flight helicopter service is available for critical situations, when its use is
deemed necessary by EMS personnel.

Port Mansfield has a small, volunteer library located next to the Post Office
which is open a few hours a week. Raymondville has the Reber Memorial Library, 689-2930,
at 190 N. 4th. A larger library is the Lon Hill Library, 427-8841, in Harlingen at 502 E.
Tyler. Out-of-town library cards are available from these libraries for a nominal fee.
